A WELCOME ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE CHAIRMAN, NLA, IT SECTION AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 7^TH LIBRARY AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TODAY (LITT) 2013 NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON MONDAY, 7^TH OCTOBER, 2013 AT THE RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, RIVERS STATE

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have a great pleasure in welcoming you all to the 7^th National Workshop of the NLA, IT Section tagged Library and Information Technology Today (LITT) 2013. The theme of this year’s workshop is “Nigerian Libraries: Evolving in New Directions”. The IT Section of Nigerian Library Association is one of the most proactive and pragmatic sections of our noble professional body. This section could not have done less in the face of the current challenges faced by our libraries nationally. We are therefore grateful to the Vice Chancellor, Professor B.B. Fakae, for accepting to host this workshop unconditionally. In addition, he provided Amphi-Theatre for this opening ceremony, the library staff,  the Information Technology Centre (ITC) staff and facilities as well as the internal security. He also sponsored five Library Staff to this workshop and several other logistics to ensure that all delegates had a pleasant stay in RSUST.

The infusion of computer and other communication technologies into library and information services has brought the information professionals around the world into the reality of the electronic age. Library Information professionals in Nigeria have however decided to take the bull by the horn and build up their knowledge-base in this all-important area of ICT penetration into library and information services provision. Hence, the commencement of National Workshop tagged Library and Information Technology Today about seven years ago and this is the 7^th in that series. NLA IT Section has come a long way in her fulfillment of capacity building for Library and Information Professionals and related staff. We also provide supportive roles to the institutions and organisations on issues that affect the involvement of ICT in our various types of libraries nationwide as well as organising conferences, workshops and seminars for stakeholders as it is being done today. For all the stakeholders that came from far and near, I welcome you to Port Harcourt, Rivers State and to one of the leading universities in Nigeria and Africa at large.

With diminutive and giant leaps, libraries and information organizations are evolving in innovative and exciting ways. Hence, the theme of this year’s workshop is “Nigerian Libraries: Evolving in New Directions”. The rapid changing technology and social trends are fueling ICT evolution in both exciting and frightening ways. Computers, spaces, library and information services are all evolving in different, and mostly positive directions. This year’s LITT 2013 theme will focus on mobile devices and electronic collections and how their use is changing the spaces and services in libraries. It focuses on the skills, competencies, and roles that are evolving to deal with all these changes in our communities and organizations. I stand to commend the vision and mission of the NLA and the relentless efforts of the Association at improving the standard of services in Nigerian libraries which we have pursued with vigor over the years especially the capacity building programme for Nigerian library and information professionals.

The Association has done so much in strengthening and supporting the effective service delivery through various trainings and seminars of this nature to expose information managers and library professionals to attain optimum level of development and growth as required in the 21^st Century.

Mr Vice Chancellor, Ladies and gentlemen, as you are aware, the programme of the association will be on for one whole week featuring intensive training and development of human capacity. At the end of the exercise, the participants are expected to have a fulfilled professional outing which will add value to their libraries as well as service delivery in their various organisations.

One of the most important requirements for a nation to develop and sustain that development is excellent and relevant educational programme for her people. This among others, is what we strive to do at IT Section of NLA through our frequent training programme through seminars and workshops, especially LITT National Workshop, as we all know that a key ingredient for a good education is the relevancy which the information specialists provide.

Daily Report of LITT 2013 National Workshop – 3rd Day

The workshop entered its third day on Wednesday, 9^th October, 2013. More participants arrived at the venue and had their registration around 8.00 am. Messrs Felix Azubuike and Ayodele Alonge briefly took the participants through the concluding part of the previous day’s practical session. The first session for the day started thereafter.

   

Dr Chinwe Anunobi,  an Associate Professor of Library and Information Science anchored both morning and afternoon sessions. Her first paper was titled ‘Engaging Communities: What, Why and How of Connecting, Group Productivity and Collaboration Tools. Her second paper was titled ‘‘Engaging Communities: The What, Why and How of Creating and Publishing, Finding and Organising/Re-using Tools’.

The two sessions were fully practical in presentation. Blogging, Twitting, Skyping and Organizational Management media were carefully taught. Issues concerning their account opening, registration, among others were practically done by the participants during the two sessions. As usual, the participants were allowed to share their individual library’s experience and some of the challenges faced in the course of providing cutting edge electronic library services to their clients. Several advises and practical solutions were provided by the resource persons and experienced professionals. Emphasis was more on hands-on practical.

The Chairman of the Section, in an interlude between the two sessions, presented a power-point presentation on Emerald insight Publishers, one of the supporters of the Workshop who gave free customised USB flash drives, jotters and 14 days free access to all emerald journals to the first 50 registered participants.

Dr. Ruth Anyanwu, a medical practitioner was also invited to give a brief talk about health issues to the participants.

LITT 2013: Day 2 -LIIT Section National Workshop @ Port-Harcourt

Daily Report of LITT 2013 National Workshop – 2^nd Day

The workshop entered its second day on Tuesday, 8^th October, 2013. More participants who arrived late on Monday were seen at the registration desk as early as 8.00 am doing their registration for the workshop. 

The first session for the day was anchored by Samuel Utulu, a Principal Librarian and doctoral student at Capetown University, South Africa. His delivery was titled ‘ New Trends in Content and Resource Sharing Technology’. The session was quite revealing as the new technological innovations that handle virtual resource sharing among the libraries were taught. The participants were allowed to share their individual library’s experience and later engaged with hands-on practicals.

The second session started after a brief recess. This session was anchored by the immediate past Chairman of IT Section, Mr Felix Azubuike. His own delivery was titled ‘Using QR Codes in Library Services’. He took the participants through the world of Quick Response Codes and their applications to library’s service delivery. Much of this session was also hands-on practicals as each participant was encouraged to learn the process and practicalize it.

LITT 2013: NATIONAL WORKSHOP OPENING DAY

October 7^th would continue to be a memorable day for NLA IT Section because of two major things. Firstly, we came in contact with a fully loaded 21^ST Century ICT compliant Vice Chancellor and secondly, the divine intervention that reduced our human apprehension to zero. 

The opening ceremony of the LITT 2013 National Workshop was held at the Amphitheatre Hall of Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. It was a well-attended ceremony that had the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. B.B. Fakae, all principal officers, Deans, Directors, HODs, university community and most importantly, participants from within and outside Nigeria present. The Chairman of IT Section, Ayodele Alonge delivered the welcome address. 

The occasion was chaired by Dr. Femi Kadiri, the Rivers State NLA Chairman who stressed the importance and timeliness of LITT 2013 to LIS professionals in Nigeria while the Director of ICT Centre of the University, Professor Braide delivered the Keynote Address. The Vice Chancellor in his ICT emotion-laden speech eventually declared the workshop open.

 Immediately after the Opening Ceremony, the training proper commenced with the opening lecture titled ‘Augmented Reality, Dynamic Capability and Next Generation Libraries’ The section was anchored by Samuel Utulu of Redeemer’s University, a Principal Librarian and doctoral student at Capetown University, South Africa. The comfort of the training venue and availability of more than enough ICT hands-on equipment made the participants felt at home as they could easily practice all that was taught.

Meanwhile, the workshop enters its second day today with more participants still on the way. It gets more interesting as the mystery of the workshop’s success keeps unfolding.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 6TH LIBRARY AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TODAY (LITT) NATIONAL WORKSHOP HELD FROM 8TH TO 12TH OCTOBER 2012 AT THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE

Introduction

The 6th Library and Information Technology Today (LITT) national workshop of the Information Technology Section was held from 8th to 12th October 2012 at the MPB 04 Computer Laboratory of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Ogun State with over 50 participants from across the country in attendance. The theme of the workshop was “Creating Innovative Libraries in Nigeria”.

Opening CeremonyThe workshop was declared opened by the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Professor Olusola Bandele Oyewole, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development), Professor Felix Kolawole Salako, while the Keynote address was presented by the Pioneer University Librarian of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Dr. Taofeek Salisu (FNLA).

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Professor Olusola Bandele Oyewole in his address welcomed participants to the workshop. He gave a brief history of the university and informed participants of the university’s commitment to excellence adding that “FUNAAB will not spare any effort at ensuring that we provide the best in teaching, learning, character and community extension services”. Prof. Oyewole said that the institution’s “Nimbe Adedipe Library and the entire administrative and academic programmes of the university were ICT-driven”. According to him, “I must say that this university has been ICT-compliant for many years even when many others apart from the likes of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State and University of Ibadan, Oyo State. We have made it a practice that our lecture notes are readily available on the internet. Our sound lecturers are lecturing through the use of multimedia equipment. We are already in the ICT age,”

The Chairman of the Information Technology Section, Mr. Felix Azubuike, while welcoming participants and guests to the workshop traced the origin of Library and Information Technology Today (LITT) workshop. He said that LITT was conceived by the immediate past executive led by Mr. Samuel Eyitayo (FNLA) primarily to address the obvious gaps in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in practice of Library and Information Professionals (LIPs) in Nigeria. He added that LITT was intended to update all Library and Information Professionals (LIPs) on the current state of Libraries and Information Technology in the Library world. The Chairman who highlighted the importance of creating innovative libraries in Nigeria, tasked participants to embrace information technology and innovations in order to add value to the profession and enhance user satisfaction. He thanked the Vice Chancellor for graciously accepting to host the 2012 LITT workshop despite the very short notice.

The Ag. University Librarian of FUNAAB, Dr. (Mrs.) Mulikat Salaam enjoined participants to take advantage of the workshop to improve their knowledge and skills. She thanked the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oyewole and other management staff for their support towards hosting the workshop, despite the short notice.

Keynote Speaker, Dr. Taofeek Salisu (FNLA)

The Keynote Speaker and Pioneer University Librarian of FUNAAB, Dr. Taofeek Salisu (FNLA) in his well delivered address titled: “Creating Innovative Libraries in Nigeria”, charged participants and library professionals to educate and upgrade themselves in the knowledge of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in order to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in the discharge of their duties. He emphasized the need to create innovative libraries in Nigeria through electronic lending services, electronic reference services, learning centre services, library services on mobile technology, digitization, etc. Dr. Salisu stated that for libraries of any type to be relevant in the 21st century they must be in the vanguard of provision of service-based activities that are technology driven. He added that “the 21st Century libraries, especially in Nigeria can be relevant if only the librarians accept with great enthusiasm the great challenge occasioned by the demand of present day library users”. He stated that the librarian of the 21st century in Nigeria must be versatile in many areas of information business, adding that “he will have to be an information provider rather than just a bridge between information medium and the clientele”. Workshop properThe workshop commenced immediately after the opening ceremony on Monday, October 8, 2012 with brief introductions by participants – including their job roles and expectations at the workshop. Thereafter the Chairman of the IT Section, Felix Azubuike presented a general overview of the workshop. The first presentation was made by Mr. Joseph Longshak of the Central Bank of Nigeria Library, Abuja. His presentations were titled: “Emerging Technologies for Information Literacy: Hands-on Screen-cast for User Instruction” and “Library-based online training programmes”.

The second day, Tuesday, October 9, 2012 saw a continuation and conclusion of Mr. Joseph Longshak’s previous day’s presentation. The other presentations for the day were by Mr. Ayo Alonge of KPMG Services, Lagos on “Electronic Books: Trends and Markets” and “Mobile Technology: Strategic Approaches in Libraries”.

The third day, Wednesday, October 10, 2012 had three presentations beginning with Mr. Ayo Alonge’s presentation on “Exploring and Exploiting Search Engines”. Other presentations were by Dr. Ezra Gbaje of the Department of Library and Information Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on “Content Management: Digital Archiving and Preservation; Content Harvesting, Workflows, and Publishing; and the Leadership Role of Libraries in Organizational Content Management” and Web Design: Creating the Ultimate Interface. The last session of the day was on “Library Issues and Challenges”. The session afforded participants an opportunity to share brief thoughts on what the BIG things for libraries will be in the next few years - participants shared their institutions’ plans for next week, next month, and next year. Participants also had the opportunity of asking our roomful of savvy colleagues anything that was on their mind.

The first presentation on Thursday, October 11, 2012 was a video presentation via Skype and was delivered by Mr. Samuel Eyitayo (FNLA), Director, Information Resource Centre, Lagos. His presentation was on “e-Library USA”. The last presentation for the day was by Dr. Chinwe Anunobi, Digital Librarian, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka on “Information Literacy Skills in the Service of End-Users”. The sessions were practical, interactive, resourceful, and educative.

ClosingThe workshop ended with a dinner hosted by the Management of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Oyewole was present at the dinner despite his very busy schedule. LITT 2012 CDs and certificates were presented to participants by the Ag. University Librarian of FUNAAB, Dr. (Mrs.) Mulikat Salaam.
