 This is a call to  University Lecturers and University Students to volunteer to participate in the web-based  Ideation Workshop for the Design of Mobile Storytelling Application Interface 

This is technical-based research that involves the design of a mobile user interface for storytelling with higher education in focus.

Interested participants should be available and ready to participate in all 4 meetings. The meeting days and times will be communicated to all accepted participants

• First  Meeting: Workshop: The first meeting/workshop will be for requirements gathering and concept design.
  
  
• Second Meeting :  Workshop : Concept Design Second stage of the ideation workshop is to generate, group and illustrate the design ideas. The stages involved are: Brief, ideas, sketches, alternative concepts and developing concepts and finished concept
  
  
• Third Meeting- User Testing of Wireframe: The next meeting will be after the output of the workshop has been transformed into low-fidelity wireframes.
  
  
• Fourth Meeting -usability testing:  After the mockups are completed and prototyped, we will return them to the participants for usability testing to evaluate the usability of the system.

International Writing Workshop: The Media & Challenges of Presenting Nigerian Views in Foreign Journals

Nigerians are good and intelligent scholars. They excel in their work and writings. Many are members of the Editorial Boards of renowned and first-class journals. Yet, many find it difficult to get published in international journals.

In order to acquaint Nigerian scholars with the necessary skills to easily get published in international and indexed journals and in order to understand the peculiarities and intricacies of regional blocs, the Journal of Communication and Media Research is organizing a one-day international workshop on the theme: African regional blocs, the media and challenges of presenting Nigerian views in foreign journals.

The collaborative workshop between the IT section of Nigerian Library Association( NLA), IfeGrace Ventures Limited and Ghana Library Association (GLA) kicked off  yesterday with  wide ranging representation of librarians from across Ghana and Nigeria in attendance.

Amongst the key dignitaries in attendance were the Ghanaian second lady in government, Her Excellency Mrs. Matilda Amissah-Arthur who was the former president of GLA, Prof. Ellis Badu and a huge other representation of the academia from the catchment institutions.

Mrs. Martilda delivered the keynote address. The conference theme is Librarianship and the demands for new leadership skills .The conference is focused at heads of libraries and emerging leaders in Librarianship. The conference seeks to

1) Explore the leadership qualities expected of modern day heads of libraries

2) Reveal the leadership skills expected of a twenty-first century library leaders

3) The third goal of the workshop/seminar is to equip leaders with performance evaluation skills as applicable to librarianship.

On the line-up of resource persons attacking the  conference theme are Dr. James O Daniel, president of west African library association(WALA),Prof. Ellis Badu of university  of Ghana library, and Prof. D. Osyn Okanya and Dr Solomon Avbioroko.

LITT 2013: Day 2 -LIIT Section National Workshop @ Port-Harcourt

Daily Report of LITT 2013 National Workshop – 2^nd Day

The workshop entered its second day on Tuesday, 8^th October, 2013. More participants who arrived late on Monday were seen at the registration desk as early as 8.00 am doing their registration for the workshop. 

The first session for the day was anchored by Samuel Utulu, a Principal Librarian and doctoral student at Capetown University, South Africa. His delivery was titled ‘ New Trends in Content and Resource Sharing Technology’. The session was quite revealing as the new technological innovations that handle virtual resource sharing among the libraries were taught. The participants were allowed to share their individual library’s experience and later engaged with hands-on practicals.

The second session started after a brief recess. This session was anchored by the immediate past Chairman of IT Section, Mr Felix Azubuike. His own delivery was titled ‘Using QR Codes in Library Services’. He took the participants through the world of Quick Response Codes and their applications to library’s service delivery. Much of this session was also hands-on practicals as each participant was encouraged to learn the process and practicalize it.

THEME: Access to information and knowledge: a new perspective on familiar issues

DATE:     4^TH MARCH – 7^TH MARCH, 2013

PARTICIPANTS: LIBRARIANS AND INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS WITHIN AND OUTSIDE LAGOS STATE

The workshop with the theme:  “Access to information and knowledge: a new perspective on familiar issues “ was informed by the need to continually broaden the knowledge of library and information professionals and other stakeholders in the field in order to enhance information service delivery. This theme was carefully chosen not only to underscore the importance of access to information and knowledge environment, but also to explore the current trends in information service delivery.

The workshop provided hands-on experience with the aim of equipping participants with the necessary skills.

Keynote address:  The keynote address was delivered by Rhonda Watson, Public Diplomacy officer, US Consulate General. the thrust  of her address is on self development and  for information professionals to  identify  the areas of needs in their organization and  meet such  information needs  From Rhonda’s address, librarians are to be queens and kings of sources of information and knowledge. But as much as this is imperative, Nigeria is particularly limited by access to the internet because of the low bandwidth.

 ACTIONS

Eminent LIS practitioners  assembled as speakers at the workshop. These are Mr Samuel Eyitayo, IRC Director, U.S. Consulate General, Lagos, Dr (Mrs) Idowu, the University Librarian, Lagos State University, Mr Ukoha Igwe, the University Librarian, National Open University, Ms. Omowunmi Segun, Consultant Librarian and Mr Felix Azubike, Chairperson, information Technology Section, NLA.

Mr Sam Eyitayo highlighted current trends in the library field. He motivated participants to know what is happening globally, bring it down and use with the vision of providing access to knowledge particularly through the use of social media. He enthused that today all areas of librarianship are deeply intertwined with technology, and librarians have no choice than to master the technologies of today, and as new trends come up, learn and re-learn, train and re-train users to move on. Librarians are encouraged to follow the trends, otherwise they go obsolete. Users are part of the society, once librarians develop themselves, it will invariably get down to the society.

Ms Omowunmi Segun’s presentation was on social tagging. She highlighted the   differences between social tagging and controlled vocabulary. Social tagging is a new trend in creating access to knowledge and there are some Integrated Library Systems (ILS) that have platforms for social tagging.

Mr Ukoha Igwe’s presentation focused on driving access to knowledge: action for library in Nigeria. There is an urgent need for libraries to bridge the digital divide by empowering their users through information literacy.

Dr (Mrs) Idowu spoke so much about the need for marketing library services. This can be done through librarians and information professionals creating awareness through different avenues such as use of signs, posters, campaigns, seminars, local bulletins and even social media. She talked so much about branding by showcasing your products and services to users and stakeholders. Overall, she talked about creating a user friendly environment through librarians, but this is only possible through those who have the right attitude. Librarians and information professionals should be efficient, competent, enthusiastic, adapt, be knowledgeable and astute person.

Felix Azubike’s paper was on performing effective web searches in a networked environment. He highlighted the need for librarians to explore the resources on the web in an attempt to facilitate access to information.

Ayo Alonge handled the practical aspect of the workshop by exposing participants to hands on experience on different Google products and services.

Resolution.

1. Information professionals should go for training and workshops to equip themselves.
2. As information professionals, provision of access to information using the various media should be ensured.
3. There is an urgent need for libraries to form consortia and library networks.   The national bodies: National Library of Nigeria, Librarian Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) and Nigerian Libraries Association (NLA) should take up this responsibility.
4. Organizations should provide a good working environment as well as infrastructures that will facilitate access to knowledge.
5. Librarians should keep abreast of information to know what is happening and the current trend in their profession and devote time for self development.
6. Information professional should market, brand and re-brand their services.
