2023 Guinness Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme

2023 Guinness Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme is for young Nigerian students who are currently studying in a Nigerian university or polytechnic. The scholarship is designed to support students who are in need of financial assistance to complete their undergraduate studies.

The scholarship will cover tuition fees and provide a maintenance allowance for successful applicants for the duration of their course. 

Eligibility criteria for the scholarship include being a first or second-year student in a Nigerian university or polytechnic, having a minimum CGPA of 3.0, and being 18 years old or above.

Interested applicants are required to apply online through the Guinness Nigeria scholarship portal, where they will be asked to provide personal and academic information, as well as a statement of purpose explaining why they should be awarded the scholarship. 

The application deadline is April 28th, 2023.

Scholarship for Young University Students

Seyi Bickersteth Scholarship Programme (SBSP)

The fellowship is named after Seyi Bickersteth, who worked for KPMG in Nigeria as a Senior Partner from 2002 to 2016 and as Chairman of KPMG Africa from 2014 to 2016. After retiring, he served on several boards, including Leadway Assurance and Andersen Africa, where he was the Regional Managing Partner and Chairman. Seyi Bickersteth was more than a leader; he was a mentor and a teacher who cared deeply about the growth of those around him, which is why an educational fund has been established in his honour.

BENEFITS:

Beneficiaries of the programme will receive a scholarship grant worth Four Hundred Thousand Naira (N400,000) annually. Asides from the scholarship grant, beneficiaries will also receive:

• Summer internship opportunities during the holiday or while they are on National Industrial attachment.
• Mentorship opportunities and exposure. - Upon completion, candidates will be eligible to work at any of the three firms (KPMG, Leadway Assurance or Andersen) if they graduate with a First Class or Second Class Upper Division degree.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT:

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

• A minimum of 5 Distinctions (As & Bs) from their WASSCE (including English and Mathematics).
• A minimum score of 230 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
• Candidates must have admission into a Federal University in Nigeria.
• Candidates' four-year course must be in Accounting. Business Administration. Economics, Finance, Insurance or Actuarial Sciences.
• This scholarship is open to students just admitted into 100 level of their studies at the time of application.

Meet the new National Librarian of Nigeria Professor. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi

Professor. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi is a former University Librarian at the Nigeria's Federal University of Technology, Owerri. She began her work as a librarian at the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, Nigeria, where she helped to develop the ICT section, the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Center, and the University Library's automation. As a Digital Librarian at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Nigeria, she pioneered the establishment and development of a digital library.

She is involved in the creation of new and aspiring LIS professionals as a lecturer in polytechnics and universities, particularly in the area of ICT use in libraries. She is a prominent figure in the national mentoring program for the use of information technology in library and information science operations and services. She has around fifteen masters and doctoral students under her supervision. She is a Mortenson Center for International Library Program Associate, a United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) certified trainee on Innovation Collaborative for Development, an e-Learning course on Social Media, and a graduate of Galilee International Management Institute (GIMI) Israel.

She has over 60 publications in national and international journals, including the chapter “Technology Librarian in a Developing Country” in the book A Day in the Life: Career Options in Library and Information Science and IFLA Publication 139: Strategies for Regenerating the Information Professions. Chinwe is a chartered member of the Nigerian Library Association and the Profession's Information Technology Section. She has participated in and helped organize numerous national and international conferences and seminars. She is a regular attendee at IFLA conferences, where she has given numerous presentations.

She is interested in networking, mentoring, and research related to the use of ICT in library and information science, as well as the requirements of library users. She specializes in the creation and management of digital libraries, as well as Open Educational Resources. Chinwe is happily married to Mr. Sonny Anunobi, and they have four children together.

Professor Chinwe Veronica Anunobi is the CEO of the National Library of Nigeria. 

Director, Press and Public Affairs, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Ben Bem Goong, who conveyed the appointment in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, said this was in continuation of efforts to strengthen the delivery machinery of programmes in the education sector.

Professor Anunobi takes over from Professor L.O. Aina who steer the ship of the National Library for 5 years.

Assessment of factors affecting social media use for HIV and AIDS communication among undergraduate students in South-Western Nigeria

Abstract
The study evaluated factors that affect use of social media for HIV and AIDS communication among federal university undergraduates in south western Nigeria. The cross-sectional research method was employed. Structured questionnaire copies were administered to 355 undergraduate students. Quantitative data gathered from the administered questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result showed that blogs (41.1%), twitter (25.4%) and WhatsApp (17.7%) were the social media sites preferred by male and female respondents for sharing and accessing HIV and AIDS information. The use of these social media sites for HIV and AIDS information communication was influenced by privacy and neutrality. It also showed that majority of the undergraduates affirmed that HIV and AIDS information on social media platforms was very useful because it facilitated access to quality tips on HIV. A significant percentage of the respondents also affirmed that the use of social media was hugely affected by epileptic nature of power supply, poor network connectivity, ICT skills and cost of subscription.
