NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF PHARMACOGNOSY 15TH SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE 2021:  THREE FORMER VICE-CHANCELLORS, FORMER INEC CHAIRMAN AND SIXTEEN OTHERS ELECTED AS FELLOWS

The Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy (NSP)  holds its 31st AGM and 15th Scientific Conference  from March 24—26, 2021 and will be hosted by the University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. It, therefore, gives me great pleasure to  address the press today on the forthcoming conference of our Society.

Pharmacognosy, which is the science of biogenic or nature-derived pharmaceuticals or poisons, deals with the cultivation, commerce, chemistry, genetics, quality control, biological activities of naturally occurring drugs of plant, animal and mineral origin.

The Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy was established in1982 with the following objectives among others:

·        To make pharmacognosy more meaningful and useful to the community

·        To find ways of improving the methods of teaching the subject in order to highlight its relevance to the practice of pharmacy in Nigeria

·        To find effective ways of stimulating the interest of our Governments and liaising with nationally and internationally related organizations or individuals such as the WHO, Scientific, Technical and Research Commission of the African Union (OAU/STRC), Traditional Medical Practitioners etc in practicalising   medicinal plant research findings

·        To institute and maintain research collaborations in the field of pharmacognosy

·        To create and occasionally review a possible national pharmacognosy curriculum as well as encourage occasional reviews of the pharmacognosy curriculum offered in Nigerian Faculties of Pharmacy

·        To create a forum for regular meetings in form of conferences, symposia, workshop  etc in order to promote scientific and other publications

·        To carry out such functions that will project the image of pharmacognosy

Towards the realization of these objectives, members of the Society have contributed (in leaps and bounds and in various dimensions) to bring to the front burner the relevance and importance of medicinal plants research and in drug discovery and development, herbal drug production as well as holistic health care delivery in Nigeria.

Furtherance to these core objectives of the NSP, the theme of this year’s conference is:

Mainstreaming herbal medicine into the 21st-century healthcare

          system in Nigeria”

Sub themes of the conference will include:

·        Clinical trials of phytomedicines

·        Search for bioactive substances from medicinal plants

·        Dosage forms of herbal preparations

·        Standardization and quality control of herbal medicines

·        Cultivation, conservation and sustainable supply of medicinal plants

·        Documentation of herbal medicine usage and practice

·        Pharmacovigilance of herbal medicines

·        Phytomedicine and the COVID-19 challenge

Apart from plenary lectures on the theme by seasoned speakers, there will  be over 150 selected  peer-reviewed oral and poster paper presentations on various topics by participants. These papers will be published, after further review in our highly rated society’s organ,  “Journal of Natural  Products and Medicine”

Another very important and significant feature in this year’s conference is the induction of twenty deserving members into the Fellowship of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy (FNSPcog)  in recognition of their outstanding scholarship and service to Society. According to records, this will be the second-time such awards are made in the 39-year history of the society. Making the list are nine posthumous awards as well as at least three living former Vice-Chancellors and a former INEC Chairman, who are all members of the Society, among others.  (See Appendix 1 for Full List)

The Society is committed, in collaborations with other relevant agencies outside the shores of this country, to the promotion and development  of traditional medicine, medicinal plant research and utilization with a view to alleviating the misery of several diseases facing populations in developing economies in Africa.
