The Centre for Communication, Media
and Society, University of KwaZulu-Natal, is a premier African
postgraduate research and teaching unit in the School of Applied Human
Sciences. The staff cohort all have PhDs, and include
National Research Foundation -rated and award-winning
researchers. The Centre has a sustained track record of above average research
productivity in books and high-impact journals. The student body comprises
twenty students at each of three post graduate levels (Honours/ 4th year;
Masters by research; and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)), with an optimum
throughput graduation period. In the past four years, the Centre has graduated
15 PhDs and 34 research Masters’ students, as well as a full cohort of Honours
students in minimum time. Many of our students are international, coming
from Europe and America. African students are particularly well
represented, with alumni from 16 African countries.
Full-time research students receive fee remission for 1 year (Masters) or
3 years (PhD).

Our degree programmes, as well as, our research activities, have a close connection with the surrounding society and the industries in it. The successful candidate will become part of the Computational Media Lab and undertake interdisciplinary research focusing on the societal challenges related to the datafication of health. The Computational Media Lab is a research lab that engages with challenges brought about by processes of digitalisation and datafication. Using, reconfiguring, and creating a multitude of research methodologies, research within this lab engages with the tension between computer science, interaction design and media studies by studying how, for instance, people engage with and make sense of big data and digital technologies in their everyday lives. The PhD project is expected to explore questions of datafied power, how people are living their everyday lives with and through data, and how relationships between data and people are mediated in various ways. This position is specifically oriented towards experiences and expectations within health care and self-care practices but should also probe links to other relevant areas of datafication that are not explicitly related to health.

An employed Ph.D. student shall primarily devote time to his/her own research training. The Ph.D. programme is worth 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and usually combines with 20% teaching.
The position as PhD student normally consists of 80% research within the Computational media lab, and 20% teaching at the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology. The successful candidate will partake in the future developments of the master’s programme "Media Technology: Strategic Media Development” that draws on a wide range of fields such as internet of things, digital humanities, digital ethnography, computer science, cultural studies, and media studies.

Graduate programs leading to an M.A. degree also exist in Tourism and Cultural Communication and in Strategic Public Relations.

A Ph.D. is required with relevant professional experience. Candidates for positions should have a record of previous teaching experience as well as professional experience and/or scholarly/creative activities in the area of emphasis and teaching experience that meets international standards. Candidates are expected to be effective teachers/scholars and are expected to teach in both the undergraduate and graduate programs and be involved in outreach efforts to the community. Preference for positions will be given to candidates who demonstrate the ability to teach, conduct research and/or engage in creative activity and participate in interdisciplinary College efforts in addition to their specific areas of specialization. Successful candidates should have the ability to contribute to at least one or more of the College’s required core courses such as: media and society; public speaking and persuasion; media law and ethics; research methods; culture and media criticism; and/or digital media. Knowledge of entrepreneurship as well as experience in social/digital media and creativity is beneficial. Also desired, but not required, is bi-lingual fluency in Arabic and English. Previous teaching experience in an ESL environment is helpful. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply.
